NECA has put much of its Turtles shelf on Buy 2 Get 1 Free until noon tomorrow, and the one that comes off is the cheapest

A flash sale is a strange thing to run on a line built out of deep cuts. NECA’s Turtles shelf is where you go for Wingnut and Screwloose, for a stump wrestling Ace Duck, for a Channel 6 newsroom that ships with a rotary phone, a bowl of ooze and two framed photographs propped on the floor. Selections from it are on sale anyway. The banner across store.necaonline.com reads “HAPPENING NOW! BUY 2, GET 1 FREE, 24 HOURS ONLY”, and the collection behind it puts the same offer in longer form, with a start of noon Eastern today and a run of 24 hours. That lands the end of it at noon Eastern tomorrow. [1]

What is eligible is the good stuff rather than the leftovers. The Channel 6 Newsroom four pack is in at $149.99, the dearest thing in the collection still orderable, and the quarter scale 1990 movie Leonardo follows it at $129.99. The Mirage Comics run is well represented, by Savanti Romero and the Ultimate Foot Ninja at $37.99 apiece, by Cyborg Donatello at $34.99, and by the Shredder Clones box set at $99.99. Turtles in Time brought along its Super Shredder and its Leatherhead, both $34.99. Donatello’s Portable Portal Generator is in at $44.99, the Last Ronin accessory set at $49.99, and, improbably, the discount now reaches Shredder’s Throne from The Secret of the Ooze at $79.99. It is a chair.

Which of the three goes free

NECA does not spell out the part that decides what the sale is worth, and the terms it does publish point the wrong way. The collection page says the discount “will be applied automatically at checkout when 3 eligible products have been added to your cart”, which tells a shopper nothing about which of the three comes off and implies they will not see it until the last screen. So we built a basket and looked.

Savanti Romero at $37.99, the Ultimate Foot Ninja at $37.99 and the Michelangelo Head Knocker at $29.99 went in together. The three of them subtotal $105.97 and the cart charges $75.98, with the head knocker’s own line reduced to zero. The discount comes off the cheapest of the three. It also turns up in the cart rather than waiting behind the checkout page, so a basket can be rearranged and the number watched before anything is committed to.

That makes the sale reward a basket built at one price tier rather than a mixed one. Any three items at $37.99 cost the price of two, and any three at $34.99 do the same, so the $37.99 and $34.99 rows are where the free slot is worth the most it can be worth on a like-for-like basket. Reach for the $29.99 head knocker to round one out and the free slot falls to $29.99, and that swing is the only part of this a shopper actually controls. Going the other way buys nothing back. The quarter scale Leonardo beside two $37.99 figures subtotals $205.97 and charges $167.98, so a basket twice the money has still only taken $37.99 off.

What has already gone

Five of the 29 listings in the collection are sold out and the discount cannot reach them. [2] The two that will sting are the 2012 Sketch Turtles four pack, the con exclusive we covered when it was announced in July, and the 1990 movie Capture of Splinter set. Tokka and Rahzar have gone too, along with the Series 2 Rocksteady and Bebop and the Lotus and Chakahachi two pack.

Stan Sakai’s Usagi Yojimbo is filed under Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles here, and both of his black and white figures are eligible at $37.99. They price into the same tier as the cartoon Ultimates, which makes them perfectly good basket filler for anyone who has run out of Turtles. [3]

We wrote up Super7’s Labor Day Buy 3 Get 1 Free earlier this month, and we could not say then which of the four came off, because Super7 had published no terms and the only place to find the answer was a cart. The answer was in a cart this time too, but at least it turned out to be a straight one. Noon Eastern tomorrow, then. Build the basket at one price tier, read the cart total before committing to it, and remember that whatever ends up cheapest in there is the thing being handed over for nothing.
