Splinter and Casey Jones Are Finally Playable, and Wrath of the Mutants Hits Switch 2 on September 4

Every version of Wrath of the Mutants so far has given us the same four playable characters. TRAILMARK Games has just announced the one that does not. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Arcade: Wrath of the Mutants - Ninja Edition lands on Nintendo Switch 2 on September 4, and Master Splinter and Casey Jones are on the select screen for the first time!

The digital version is 29.99 dollars and up for preorder now. The cartridge follows on October 9 at the same price. It is a Switch 2 exclusive, so there is no Switch 1 version of this one.

Splinter is the headline, and he brings a boss fight with him

Sensei against Shredder, one on one, is the whole pitch in a single frame. TRAILMARK led its own press screens with it, so they know exactly what they have, and honestly we would have led with it too.

Casey shows up in two player. The co-op bar names both of you across the top of the screen, which is the sort of small thing arcade ports routinely get wrong and we always notice.

What is new, and what is not

This is an expanded version of the beat em up, not a new game. Nintendo’s own store copy says so, calling it the 2017 arcade classic.

The Switch 2 work is real, though. TRAILMARK lists 1080p handheld and 4K docked, 60 frames per second, HDR and faster loading, plus reflection effects, anti-aliasing, an enhanced lighting system and dynamic shadows.

The content total is six stages and 13 boss battles. TRAILMARK is specific that three stages and six of those bosses were never in the arcade cabinet. Coney Island and Dimension X are both in, so our favourite stages survive the port. The turtles are voiced by the 2012 Nickelodeon cast, named in the announcement as Seth Green, Sean Astin, Rob Paulsen and Greg Cipes.

The GameShare line is the bit nobody has mentioned

Nintendo’s listing puts the player count at “Single system (1-4)”. So the four player couch co-op is exactly that: one console, four controllers.

But the same listing flags GameShare and Online under supported play modes. A friend without a copy can join off your cartridge, and GameChat carries it over the internet. For those of us who no longer have a co-op partner on the same couch, that matters more than the frame rate does. I have not seen it in a single piece of coverage yet.

You can see it in TRAILMARK’s own screenshots, too. Look at the top edge of the co-op shot above and there is a “Using GameShare” bar still sitting in the capture (we cropped ours out, but it was there). Whoever grabbed those was playing them shared.

Two things the announcement does not say, and I am not going to guess. There is no mention of an upgrade path for anyone who bought the earlier console release. And no preorder discount is attached to either version.

The digital version is on the Nintendo eShop at 29.99 dollars, out September 4. The cartridge is 29.99 dollars on Amazon, whose listing reads “This item will be released on October 9, 2026”. Same price, five weeks apart. BigBadToyStore does not carry it, which we checked rather than assumed.
