Almost every figure in BigBadToyStore's Heatboys sale costs $159.99, whatever the badge says

Almost every figure in BigBadToyStore's Heatboys sale costs $159.99, whatever the badge says

Which is the better buy, the Donatello at 11 percent off or the Raphael at 47 percent?

Neither: they cost the same. Both are $159.99, and so is every other turtle and every other Shredder that BigBadToyStore has badged on its Heatboys page this weekend, with one exception that I will come to. The percentage beside each figure is worked out against that particular figure’s own list price, and those list prices are nothing like each other: Donatello’s is $179.99 and Raphael’s is $299.99. [1] Discount the first by 11 percent and the second by 47 percent and you arrive at the same number both times.

So the badge is a fact about what BigBadToyStore used to ask for a figure, not about what it is asking now. Sort the page by discount, the way the store’s own link arrives, and the figures with the highest old prices rise to the top rather than the ones worth buying. The sale is real and it is a decent one, but it is flat.

What is actually in stock

Five of the discounted figures are in stock and can go in a basket now. Shredder, HB0016, carries the deepest cut of those at 38 percent off a $255.99 list, which is the mecha suit with the mini Shredder that rides in its back, the potion launcher and the LED effects. [2] The three classic turtles that come with the bonus accessories, Leonardo HB0012, Raphael HB0013 and Michelangelo HB0014, are in stock too, and all three ring up at $159.99 behind badges in the twenties. [5]

Promotional art for the Heatboys HB0016 Shredder figure: a purple and silver armoured mecha Shredder with bladed gauntlets and a tattered purple cape, standing against a dark grey background under the Nickelodeon Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles logo.

The exception is the MechaTran Leonardo, HB0018, which Heatboys made with Infinity Toy. It sells for $129.99 against a $184.99 list, it is in stock, and nothing else in the sale comes within thirty dollars of it. It is also, to my eye, the best looking thing Heatboys has made for this licence: a great slab of green and blue armour with a tan shell plate bolted across the front of it. Anyone who has been waiting for a reason to try the line without committing $160 should start there!

The deepest badges are pre-orders

Every one of the Golden and Gold Turtle versions is a pre-order, and between them they carry the four deepest badges on the page; all four are $159.99. [5] Donatello HB0015, with the bonus accessories, is a pre-order as well, at the same $159.99 behind the 11 percent badge that started this piece.

The Heatboys HB0093 Donatello Golden Edition figure on a black background: a gold and bronze armoured mech with a purple visor, a shield on its back and an oversized grey weapon standing beside it.

None of that makes a pre-order a bad buy; Heatboys has been good about shipping these, and the Golden versions are handsome things. But the deepest badge on the page sits on a figure that is still months away, while the figure you can have this month wears a smaller one, and both cost $159.99.

Several Heatboys turtles on that same page carry no sale badge at all and are not discounted. The 40th Anniversary Raphael and Leonardo are both $259.99, the Metallic Shredder is $209.99, and the two HEFIG Michelangelos are $179.99 and $139.99. [3] If you land on the page from a deal post and start adding things, none of those five will be any cheaper than they were last week.

Where the 26 to 47 figure came from

ToyHypeUSA flagged the sale this morning and put the range at 26 to 47 percent off. The top of that is right: Gold Turtle Raphael is the deepest badge on the page. The bottom is not, because Donatello HB0015 is badged at 11 percent. Their price line is the more useful number and it holds up: sale prices start at $129.99 and run to $159.99. [4]

Strip the duplicate out and they name four figures, carrying three different badges between them, and they print $159.99 beside every single one.

What you can buy today

The MechaTran Leonardo at $129.99 if you want the cheapest way in, Shredder at $159.99 if you want the biggest piece, and the three classic turtles at $159.99 each if you are filling out the set. All five are in stock. Our Heatboys line index has the catalogue entry for every one of them, including the Shredder page with the full accessory list, and if you are in a buying mood this month, the NECA buy two get one free offer we covered in September runs on figures that cost a good deal less than these.

BigBadToyStore has not published an end date for any of this, so a badge can come off without notice. Prices and stock in this piece were read off the product pages themselves.
