Teeny Mutant Ninja Turtles Has a Second Season, and Owensboro Knew First

A cartoon renewal normally reaches a fan through a press release and then a trade headline. This one came out of a recording studio in Owensboro, Kentucky.

Matt Gray, who runs Gray Sky Music with his wife Nicole, told WBKR’s Dave Spencer in an interview published on September 11 that Nickelodeon has greenlit a second season of Teeny Mutant Ninja Turtles and that the work has already started. Gray put the count at three to six episodes of the new season recorded so far, with the sessions running in two-hour blocks. NickALive carried the interview the following day, and Nickelodeon itself has still said nothing.

Gray Sky is in this story because of a twelve-year-old from Evansville, and Spencer lays out how. Charlie Palmer won the part of Donatello, credited as Donnie in the series, and his voice work had to be recorded in or around Evansville, so Palmer referred the production team to Gray. Gray Sky was vetted and took the sessions, which put a Nickelodeon production, in Spencer’s words, “just down the road in Owensboro.” The coaching runs over Zoom because the producers need to see Palmer while he reads, and Gray built equipment to make that possible. The job also put him in front of Paramount’s music department, which has added his work to the catalogue it draws on for future consideration.

Nickelodeon has not put out a press release, and there is no broadcast slot for one to announce. Teeny Mutant Ninja Turtles went up on the Nick Jr. YouTube channel on July 24, all thirty episodes at once, where the audience already is. Gray knew the second season was recorded before Nickelodeon had confirmed it exists.

When we covered the premiere in July we noted that the designs lean on the 2012 Nickelodeon series more than any other version of the characters, down to the initials stamped on the belt buckles, which the 1987 cartoon used first. Donatello is the clearest case: same purple mask, same bo staff, same slightly worried set to the eyes, all of it drawn at preschool proportions.

The Ultimate Donatello is pre-order sold out with a waitlist, and so are Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo and Tiger Claw. Season two will turn up on the Nick Jr. channel the way the first one did, as episodes of about four minutes posted without an announcement, but this time we know roughly where it stands before Nickelodeon tells us. Matt Gray has already recorded part of it.
